Engineering Steel Grades and Specifications

Overview of Engineering Steel

Engineering steel is a versatile range of carbon and alloy steels specifically manufactured to provide excellent machinability, dimensional accuracy, mechanical strength and reliable performance for precision engineering and industrial manufacturing applications. These steels are widely used for producing shafts, gears, pins, rollers, bushes, hydraulic components, machine parts, structural assemblies and precision-machined components where consistency and durability are essential.

Engineering steels are supplied in various product forms including bright drawn bars, hard chrome plated bars, medium carbon steels, free cutting steels, flats, squares and round bars. Each grade is manufactured to deliver specific engineering characteristics such as improved machinability, enhanced tensile strength, superior wear resistance, excellent weldability or precision surface finish depending on the intended application.

Low carbon grades such as 080A15 and EN3B provide outstanding fabrication and welding characteristics, making them ideal for general engineering and structural applications. Free machining grades including EN1A (220M07 / 230M07) and EN1A Leaded are designed for high-speed CNC machining and automatic production, reducing machining time while producing excellent surface finishes. Medium carbon grades such as EN8 (080M40) provide increased strength, toughness and wear resistance for shafts, axles, gears and mechanical power transmission components. EN14 Hard Chrome Plated Steel combines a high-strength engineering steel core with a precision chrome-plated surface, offering exceptional corrosion resistance, wear resistance and low friction for hydraulic cylinders and pneumatic equipment.

Engineering steel is extensively used throughout the automotive, aerospace, rail, oil and gas, agriculture, mining, power generation, construction equipment, hydraulics, manufacturing and precision engineering industries where dependable mechanical performance and dimensional accuracy are critical.

EN8 Medium Carbon Steel Round Bar (080M40)

EN8 Medium Carbon Steel Round Bar (080M40) is one of the most widely used medium carbon engineering steels in the UK, offering an excellent balance of strength, toughness, machinability and wear resistance. With a higher carbon content than mild steel grades, EN8 provides improved mechanical properties while maintaining good machinability and fabrication characteristics.

EN8 is commonly supplied in the untreated, normalized or bright drawn condition and can be further heat treated to achieve increased strength and hardness for demanding engineering applications. It is widely used where higher strength is required compared with low carbon steels, making it suitable for shafts, axles, gears, studs, pins, rollers, machinery components and general engineering parts.

The combination of good tensile strength, impact resistance and machinability makes EN8 a versatile choice across automotive, manufacturing, agricultural, construction equipment, power transmission and general engineering industries.

Chargentum supplies premium EN8 Medium Carbon Steel Round Bar (080M40) in a comprehensive range of diameters, manufactured to UK engineering standards and supplied with full mill certification (EN 10204 3.1). All material is available in standard stock lengths with reliable UK delivery for machining, fabrication and industrial applications.
